Gahama Goat Farm is a small holding located in Central Minnesota – about 2 hours from the Twin Cities. We have been raising goats since 2002. I am not sure if this is true with most new goat people, but we have gone through some changes over the years as we decide which direction we want to go with our herds. Originally, we started out with Alpines. We have since expanded and now have Alpines, Toggs, Nigerians and LaManchas with a few recorded grades mixed in.
This year, we concentrated on improving our Togg herd and have acquired some beautiful animals from outstanding herds. I was pleased to add a buck from Joan Rowe, DVM in California, one from the White-Hawk herd in Washington, and one from the Schmidt's in Iowa. All these bucks contain qualities that we would like to cultivate in our herd.
Our Alpine herd was also lucky to attain some wonderful bucks. We have our originals that have been with the herd but we were also lucky to get a buck from the Nixon herd, Mt. Zion, Stonegate, Iceberg, and Kara Kahl. More info on each of the bucks is on their bio. With these bucks, I am hoping to add some height to our does. I like a taller, heavier doe while maintaining their femininity and dairyness.
LaManchas have been a breed we toyed with for a bit and then, when looking for diary animals, we were able to obtain some beautiful looking animals. We got a wonderfully pedigreed buck from the Meyer herd in Idaho, one from Old Orchard via North Carolina, and one from Sherry Panuska and her Tiamet herd. We also have some wonderful does.
Not much has changed in the Nigerian herd except for the buck. Chester, our old standby that produced many wonderful animals, passed away and we now have a Twin Creeks buck who is very colorful. We hope that he will continue improving our herd. We did appraise this year but many of the animals appraised will be sold this year. We had discussed starting a dairy but after running numbers decided against it. We had one alpine doe appraise an EEEE.
We try to raise our goat kids using CAE prevention methods. Kids are vaccinated for Cl. Perfringens type C&D and Tetanus toxoid. They are also treated for coccidia and wormed on a routine basis.
I have included pictures of the goats so you can at least see what they look like. They are dry and not clipped during these pictures.
Enjoy the website. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
